MDP_4RMDP-4R Lightning Surge Protector for RS-485/RS-422
Model MDP-4R is designed to protect Modbus, CC-Link and other communication networks using RS-485 or RS-422 as electrical/physical characteristics.
M-System has had another model, MDP-DM3, which is also usable for RS-485/RS-422 lines, but specifically designed for M-System’s own protocol, MsysNet. The MDP-4R is applicable to wider range of networks, featuring its small input attenuation property, less than -0.5 dB @DC...2 MHz.

When you use lightning surge protectors on communication networks, following general precautions should be taken care of to have optimal protection:
(1) When you have multiple grounding points (which is typical in a ‘network’), installing one surge protector on the main line is not enough. Since multiple grounding points will create potential differences between devices connected to the same network, causing dielectric breakdown, you must add one surge protector per each grounding point, i.e. in each instrumentation panel.

(2) Install surge protectors also on the power supply line. When a surge protector on the communication line releases induced surge to earth, the grounding resistance will increase the earth potential. This will also create a potential difference between the communication and the power supply lines inside the device, causing dielectric breakdown.

(3) If the device to be protected has a ground terminal, cross-wire between it and the one on the surge protector and then ground to earth at the surge protector side.

The most important thing in surge protection is to maintain even potential for the entire system. The above three measures will ensure to minimize damage by levelling the potential between devices, between different parts of a device, and between device enclosures.

Product Training Session in Belgium
Tsuruko Iwasa (iwasa@m-system.co.jp) mail

PHOTOM-System’s product training session for European representatives were held on the 13th April, 2005, in Geveke Industrial NV, Vilvoorde (Brussels) in Belgium.

Twenty-one European sales persons attended the training session, people with a variety of level of experiences with M-System products, from eighteen years to only one month.

In order to help new people understand how M-System has been growing since 1972 and where we are now, I started with M-System’s general product history. We have more than 3000 signal conditioner models, and a lot of ‘old’ models are still repeatedly ordered but they are not known to new people. It is not very remarkable but important to support such long-time M-System customers, because they come to us without needing for us to call.

Remote I/O DEMOThen the training shifted to introduction of major new products and new plans:
M3 Series Programmable Transmitters
27HU HART Temperature Transmitter
PC Recorder
RZUS Bus Powered Universal Input Module & MSRPAC-2005
Remote I/O Market Analysis + Applications
Future Product Plans
ROHS & WEEE Directives
I brought from Japan some working demo units and a lot of non-working signal conditioner samples. One of them showed M-System’s Remote I/O’s dual redundancy capabilities: the R3 and R5 series with a CC-Link and a Modbus network module in one station; one connected via CC-Link to Mitsubishi PLC and monitored/controlled on Proface touch panel screen via Ethernet; the other connected to M-System 73ET Paperless Recorder via Modbus (See drawing above).

This was the first product training since five years, so it was a lot too much to cover in one day. But I recognized once again how important to have such opportunities for all of us to meet other people working with M-System and exchange information, so that we can build up a ‘Sales Network.’ I would like to continue with a similar meeting every year, will try to make it better next time. I would like thank all sales people attended the training for their diligence and patience.

Last but not least, I would like to thank Geveke Industrial and its people who offered the use of their office and helped us in organizing this meeting. And the food was very good!

PC RECORDER APPLICATIONS Part 2
Tap Water Supply Leakage Alarm
MS WordM-System’s PC Recorder MSR128 series is a Windows-PC-based recorder software program, which connects to economical I/O modules such as models RZUS, RZMS, R1M, R2M, R3 and R5 for DC mV, mA, thermocouple, RTD/potentiometer inputs and discrete I/Os. MSR128 is a fully featured program enabling the logging, trending acquisition and analysis of application data. Combined with I/O modules, MSR128 provides a low cost industrial grade data acquisition system.

PC Recorder appli
Figure 1. System configuration.
This application is introduced from one of the waterworks department in Japan using PC Recorder.

In general, tap water is distributed through water supplying pipe networks in underground. There is the possibility of water leakage by corrosion of pipes. When the water supply pressure is increased, there will be more leakage. When the pressure is lowered, there will be a problem during high usage time period and elevated locations including condominium buildings, office buildings and such.

Minimizing the loss of water supply and constantly supplying water is necessary.

Additionally, there is a danger from earthquake damage (natural disasters), accidental damage by heavy equipment used for road construction (man-made disasters), deterioration by corrosion, which cause destruction of water supply pipes. For monitoring water leakage, PC Recorder is used.

Desk-top LCD display for PC Recorder.
Figure 2. Desk-top LCD display for PC Recorder.
Flow signal transmitted from distribution reservoirs (Reservoir Area) by the telemetering system is monitored at the central monitoring system. Also inputting signal to a PC Recorder via R1M-GH, showing trend graphs on the screen. System configuration per Figure 1, nine (9) flow signals are covered (due to the record view is per 8-pen, two signals are added by model M2ADS beforehand).

The alarm output is provided by model R1M-D1 module, enabling to sound a buzzer.

Leakage alarm is not detectable only by abnormal over discharge range because high usage also can be a case. Flow from every distribution reservoir shows similar trending chart daily. If significant water leakage occurs, the tending chart will be noticeably different.

Application Notes
QI use an output signal (1-5 Vdc) from a water level indicator and watch water level of a tank.

I use a pump and pull out water of a tank, but the tank suffers from minus number pressure when I operate the pump. It is about 0.3 V fall of output signal,1-5 Vdc. This minus number pressure troubles us to do a precise measuring of tank level.

Could you suggest how to bias the output signal of 0.3 V when the pump works?

NEW PERSONNEL

Ami NAGAOKAHello, everyone. My name is Ami Nagaoka. I just joined a member of International Operation Group of M-System in this April after working at Domestic Sales Department for a half year. I graduated from State University of New York at New Paltz last May, and I was majoring Psychology. I’m very interested in Child Therapy and Developmental Psychology. I want to continue studying especially child therapy in the future.

When I was in the U.S., I got many chances to do some activities-joining in choir, break-dancing, tutoring, working at campus and so on. Through those activities, I realized that I should try anything got interested. Otherwise I would lose my possibilities and chances to meet great things and nice people. Also, I learned how interesting to share different cultures and customs with many people from all around the world.

After coming back to Japan, I heard that M-System needed who can speak English. I remembered that I had always thought to work in the international field since childhood, so I decided to enter M-System and try to use my English skills. Actually, it’s still hard to understand our products because I had never studied these kinds of things. But since co-workers are kind here, I enjoy working with them, and I’m happy to join in M-System to work with you in different countries.
