R3 Series Alarm Modules
The R3 Series Alarm Modules accepts field sensor signals and provides High or Low alarm status signals to the network. This function of course is easily performed by a PLC by supplying these sensor signals through analog input modules. However, the PLC’s programming area is not without limit. Simple alarm functions could be handled locally by remote I/O modules. This will reduce workload of the PLC not only because the PLC’s ladder program becomes simpler, but also because the sent signals are discrete, not analog which take a lot more time in data transfer.

In order to ensure the accurate alarm performance, various functions are available: deadband, alarm ON delay, alarm hold time. Setpoints and other parameters are programmable using the R3CON PC Configurator Software.

  • 4 isolated analog inputs, 4 alarm setpoints (HH / H / L /LL)
  • Setpoints selectable between -15 and +115% of the range
  • Deadband selectable over the entire range (0 to 100%)
  • Alarm ON delay time (0 to 99 seconds)
  • Alarm Hold time (0 to 99 seconds)

New R3 Series Modules
The R3-SS8N is a 8-point, non-isolated current input module.

The R3-DA64A and R3-DC64A are respectively a 64-point dry contact input module and a 64-point open collector output module. Both modules interface field contact signals via the front connectors.

Feature Upgrade

Model 6DV is a 8-mm-high, 4-digit, red LED display which is powered from a two-wire current loop (4 to 20 mA), requiring no extra power source. The maximum voltage drop caused by inserting the 6DV to the loop is only 4.0 V at 20 mA.

The display range is programmable from -1999 to 9999 using the front three control buttons: ENTER/ESCAPE, BACK/DOWN and NEXT/UP. The decimal point is also selectable (10 –1, 10 –2, 10 –3 or no decimals).

Other programmable functions include input signal calibration, offset setting and linearization. In addition to standard functions such as SQRT, RT32 and RT52, 21-point linearization is also available. This is especially beneficial to indicate process variables from low-cost non-linearizing level sensors/transmitters in the field.

With the label seat provided with a small LED backlight, both the LED display and the engineering unit indicator are clearly legible even in the dark.

In combination with Model 27HU, a field-mounted HART Temperature Transmitter with LED Display is realized in low cost. The intrinsic safety approval (ATEX and FM) is still pending. (The 27HU is already approved with ATEX intrinsic safety.)

Using the A-34 DIN Rail Mounting Adaptor and the A-6 Mounting Spacer, various mounting styles are available.

PC RECORDER APPLICATIONS Part 3
Power Monitoring System
MS WordM-System’s PC Recorder MSR128 series is a Windows-PC-based recorder software program, which connects to economical I/O modules such as models RZUS, RZMS, R1M, R2M, R3 and R5 for DC mV, mA, thermocouple, RTD/potentiometer inputs and discrete I/Os. MSR128 is fully featured enabling the logging, trending acquisition and analysis of application data. Combined with I/O modules, MSR128 provides a low cost industrial grade data acquisition system.

This is the power monitoring application at a plant.

In general, the electricity rates contract between the power companies is classified for three types, ultra high voltage (66 kV), high voltage (6600 V) and low voltage (200 V). This application is based on the user contracted high voltage power receiving, 500 kW max.

Electricity charge is the sum of basic charge and usage charge. Basic charge is set based on the maximum 30 minutes usage in the period for past 11 months and for the month. Usable power consumption for 30 minutes is contracted with the power company, which is called the “demand contract”. If exceeded the contracted usable power, penalty will be charged and next 12 months follow will be at higher basic charge by overly used rate. For that reason, to reduce electricity charge, it is necessary to reduce the basic charge, which is 30 minutes of power consumption.

Historically, “demand monitoring system” for entire plant is widely used by many end users. However, commonly it is controlling the power supply for the whole plant but not detailed for the power consumption per facility. As a solution, M-System’s PC recorder is adopted to use for monitoring per facility.

Figure 2. PC Recorder view.

Figure 1 is the system configuration. Installing LTWT (watt transducer) at each facility’s electric power inlet, its pulse output (kWh) to input into R1M-P4’s totalized counter input, then display on PC recorder (Figure 2). Counter reset by external contact input enables at pulse rising. Using the timer relay to reset 30 minutes interval, power monitoring is available like as the demand monitoring.

Also, by using LTCE (current transducer), the current monitoring can be used as reference to the usage of power. Power is the result of voltage x current, the voltage is constant so measuring current will be informative to know which facility is consuming power the most. Through R1M-GH2, the PC recorder is available to display real time trend of the amount of power consumed by each facility.

Product training 2005 / Distributors in Southeast Asia

“Product Training 2005” for the distributors in Southeast Asia was held at M-System Headquarters in Osaka, Japan from July 7 to July 9, 2005. 7 representatives from 5 companies participated in the session.

In this session the information for new products and future product plans were provided to the attendee. This time we spent a lot of time for hands on training for PC recorder, which is one of the sellable items in Southeast Asia at the moment and discussion & sharing the success stories in their countries.

We are looking forward to see more and more distributors next time. We will organize the product seminars every year in order to cultivate the market with the distributors.

Report 1
The factory tour was an eye opener and I was able to find out first hand why M-System is able to handle quick delivery when an order is made. I also get to find out how M-System employees work as a team and their continued effort to improve existing products or create new products. I even got to eat at the canteen and learn how to be part of the M-System team members.

New products like the Universal Transmitter and the Remote I/Os were introduced. The new products presented new opportunities in our own market areas for each distributor. The training culminated with each distributor having to think about the areas they can introduce the product. This is good practice as the training spare no effort in ensuring it will be successful and the participants understand the product they are trained in.

Report 2
For the 2 -day product training, essentially, we were able to see the plant itself and the production flow. One distinct feature of M-System over competitor is the ability to be flexible, meaning they can give in to customer’s non-standard requirement with the lowest add-on cost. Delivery-wise, M-System is quite fast especially if quantity is less than 10 units. We can see how organize the production floors are and how dedicated and diligent the people manning the various production areas.

Personally, the kind of products that M-System produced is not new to me. Being in the instrumentation business for almost 20 years, I have seen similar products used in the industry. But M-System is more focused by carrying and improving its core products; hence they have the widest range (models) of signal conditioners in the world. The Surge Arrester, one of its pioneer products continues to evolve and has gain worldwide acceptance. The staffs manning the International Sales Group (particularly Group II) are highly capable people willing to serve and help their distributors especially on technical matters. I was impressed by the dynamism of all the personnel of M-System. How I wished all the staffs of our company could show the same vigor and focus to the works assigned to them.

Application Notes

QWe are trying to examine temperature distribution in a furnace by using a PC.

We plan to connect ten points of K type T/C sensors to a recorder and measure the temperature distribution on the PC software. Measuring temperature is around 500°C and we are going to implant each T/C sensor in each test material and then let them move through a conveyor in the furnace so that we can get temperature distribution data.

Do you have a suitable recorder hardware and software for this application?
